I'm currently reading the Ian Fleming "Bond" story collection. I have always enjoyed certain elements of the movies - the action, the glimpses of the times (like seeing the different cars from the Connery movies, vs. the Daniel Craig movies, etc.), and even the artistic openings (one of the signature Bond-film elements).
Yes, I am enough of a Bond-geek to know how many different people have played Bond in the movies (6, last I checked), that Bond has been married (On Her Majesty's Secret Service... she was killed near the end of the movie... and this was a one-shot for the actor portraying Bond). I have also seen clips of the black-and-white, original, version of Casino Royale - with Bond being played by an American. A surprise, I know.
I read some commentary that the stories were a way to see the internal elements, making Bond quite a bit more human than the movies generally portray (although, I do think the Craig films have done the better jobs with that). So far, and I am only half-way through the second story, and can definitely see that. But I'm weird... having seen so many of the movies, and now reading the stories that have the same titles, I'm interested togo back and watch some of the older movies, as a comparison (was the story adapted, or just the use of the name)...
Back to work, and some other academic pursuits, but this was something that was really kicking around the cranium...
